  • Rachel<span class="comment-author-location"> from Madras, OR, United States</span>

I saw you on the news tonight and it brought back flashbacks of what happened to my Malamute 2 years ago from the same product and company. I came home from work and it was the most horrific site I have ever seen and never want to see again. After he covered my carpet in his own vomit, seizured on my floor and about died in my arms. My husband and I washed him in our bath tub with dawn soap and he seemed to be a little better a half hour later. However, he has nerve damage in his spine and can’t be active like he should without being in pain. The sad part is he is only 3 years old and now acts like he is older. I WILL NEVER use that product again on any animal and DON”T recommend anybody use it for any animal.

  • http://www.tinytimmy.org Tiny Timmy<span class="comment-author-location"> from Portland, OR, United States</span>

Thank you so much Miss Rachel for sharing your experience. I would like to create a Your Stories page for others like you. May I use your story? If you are local to Portland, Dr. Jeffrey Judkins and the Hawthorne vet has done wonders for Timmy with acupuncture. It really has helped tremendously. You saw him on the news, so you can compare that to his older videos at the Timmy TV link here.

  • rachel<span class="comment-author-location"> from Madras, OR, United States</span>

Absolutely! Please do. We just recently moved from the Portland area, but I will check around here at our new location. I didn’t try that because I didn’t want to do anymore damage than what was already done. They should ban the OTC flea products for dogs as well. I know this is Timmy’s page, but I just wanted to let you know that our dog had the same side affects. It is something I NEVER want to experience again. Even my children wont let us by the over counter stuff because of witnessing what happened to him. Our youngest was almost 2 when she watched her best friend almost die and now has to be gentle with him because of the spinal nerve damage. How sad! Anyways I would love if you shared Trucker’s story for other people to read about and to pass along a horrible instance that happened to our family. Anymore details you need or questions please don’t hesitate to ask me. Thank you for sharing our story

  • http://www.tinytimmy.org Tiny Timmy<span class="comment-author-location"> from Portland, OR, United States</span>

Hi Rachel! This isn’t just “Timmy’s Page”. This is everyones page. The reactions aren’t limited to cats, as you experienced. In fact, there appears to be more instances of issues with dogs, but it’s hard to tell if that is because more dog doses are sold generally.

I added the section Your Stories (you can now see the tab in the menu above). If you would share your story with others, it will make a difference.

As you know, pet owners often feel guilt and remorse for having used a product that later hurt their cat or dog. It helps knowing you are not alone. It’s important to give your experience voice.

  • rachel<span class="comment-author-location"> from Madras, OR, United States</span>

Sorry, I wasn’t trying to upset anyone. Anyways, I would love to share Trucker’s story with everyone. Unfortunately, yes Trucker experienced the horrific side affects of the product.

I definitely felt the remorse and guilt from using the product on Trucker and have found other ways to keep him safe.

I explained to our vet what happened and he told me that he had an allergic reaction to the product and that I should use another product like advantage or frontline, but I’m still scared to even use those products on him.

  • http://www.tinytimmy.org Tiny Timmy<span class="comment-author-location"> from Portland, OR, United States</span>

You haven’t upset anyone! I am so glad you are here Rachel!

That’s the catch all, either “user error” or “allergic reaction”. In some cases that’s true, but for the most part, these are all pesticides and as such should always be used only when absolutely necessary and cautiously. Even the EPA said in their webinar earlier this year to use them only IF you have an outbreak and only WHEN other methods have not been enough. That’s huge considering the manufacturers whole marketing is towards year-round use. (Depending on where you live, such as the Southern US, flea season is year round, but in most places there are peak seasons for fleas lasting only a few months.)

It would be a wonderful step forward if these manufacturers were legally forced to put all the side effects on their packaging. This way, responsible pet owners can make educated decisions instead of assuming their safety because of their wide-spread use, trusted brand names and availability almost everywhere.

It’s been 3 years but just finding Tiny Timmy’s page and reading this brings fresh tears. I feel like I failed my cat when I think about it. I wish I knew half of what I know now. In the morning she was playing, after vectra 3D that night she was lethargic but nothing to be concerned about until the next morning when she was hiding and couldn’t stay awake. Her neck had swollen up twice the size. She died 3 days later in the vet ER in an oxygen “tank” since she had trouble breathing. She was 5 years old. The vet never said a cause of death except that it was genetic, but I should have never given her toxic chemicals. It is so very nice of you to help others learn before it’s too late for them.
